The James Webb Space Telescope is world’s largest space telescope ever launched. JWST also Webb is specially built for observing at the infrared wavelengths. A wavelength range particularly rich in information for the astronomers. The sheer size and amazing sensitivity for this heat radiation demanded a novel approach to its design, launch, orbit and deployment.
After the successful launch last Christmas Webb is almost is ready to be used at its full potential. Currently the last instrument characterization is on its way, results up to now are beyond expectation.
The Netherlands provided a major contribution to the design, realization and still aids the commissioning of the Mid InfraRed Instrument – MIRI on board of Webb.
