Hyperspectral cameras provide extensive information on shape and composition but this involves high data rates. This is a problem on board small satellites, as there is not sufficient bandwidth to transfer all data to ground. The first Earth observation satellite with on-board artificial intelligence hardware processes the hyperspectral data on board. This enormously increases the amount of information that can be downlinked, proving the benefit of edge computing that extends into space. Applying this technology on ground opens the way to faster, more efficient and less complex hyperspectral vision systems.
